Back to School Organizing Tips

Since moving into our house, my husband and I have been steadfast champions of the minimalist lifestyle. Our ethos is not only born out of necessity—thanks to city apartment living—but also out of a deep-rooted belief that less truly is more. We believe in cherishing experiences over things, moments over clutter. As the school year approaches, I’ve often found myself grappling with the challenge of keeping our home organized amidst the flurry of school supplies, books, and other paraphernalia that threaten to spill over every available space. So, for those like me, looking to navigate the school prep chaos, here are some proven minimalist organizing tips to pave the way for a serene academic year.

1. Declutter First:

Before diving headfirst into those tempting back-to-school sales, take a moment. Spread out last year's materials. You’d be amazed at how many unused or gently-used items can be found. Encourage your child to be part of this decluttering process. Not only is it a valuable lesson in discerning need from want, but it also teaches them about sustainability and reuse. Items that are no longer needed can be donated, recycled, or even stored away for younger siblings.

2. Invest in Multi-functional Furniture:

Every piece of furniture in a child's room should be more than just an aesthetic addition. Think beds with storage drawers underneath or desks integrated with bookshelves. It’s like our mantra for gift-giving: every item should add value, either functional or sentimental, and if it can do both, even better!

3. Digital Over Physical:

I love books. The feel of pages, the smell of print. But, with limited space and an ever-growing syllabus, digital textbooks are a godsend. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they also reduce clutter significantly. Plus, with interactive features and integrated resources, they might just make learning a tad more engaging.

4. Create a Homework Station:

While we cherish experiences, the environment where these experiences unfold matters tremendously. Dedicate a spot in your home for academic pursuits. This spot should be well-lit, comfortable, and away from distractions. It doesn’t have to be an entire room. A quiet corner with a desk, a comfortable chair, and essential supplies can do wonders for a child’s concentration and focus.

5. Use Wall Space:

I’ve always believed in maximizing vertical spaces. Walls are not just for artwork or photographs. Install cork boards to pin important reminders, wall pockets for assignments or tasks due this week, and calendars to keep track of test dates, project deadlines, and other activities. This way, essential reminders are always in view but never in the way.

6. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity:

Here’s the hard truth: cheap, fragile supplies might seem like a bargain but end up costing more in the long run. Invest in durable, high-quality items. Whether it’s a backpack that will last more than a year or pens that won’t run out after a week, quality always trumps quantity. Think of it as curating a collection rather than simply amassing items.

Drawing lessons from our minimalist lifestyle, prepping for the school year becomes less about the frenzy of shopping and more about thoughtful, intentional choices. Remember, each choice we make—whether in buying a gift or a school supply—should echo our broader philosophy in life. Let’s make this school year not just about learning from textbooks, but also about imbibing lessons in sustainable living, thoughtful consumption, and cherishing experiences over mere things. After all, isn’t that the best lesson we can gift our children?
